o Can I purchase a CD of selected music from the JSA?

Due to copyright and licensing restrictions, we are not permitted to make CDs of the music played on our website. Some of the music, however, is available commercially. Please click the "Send A Note" link at the bottom of an artist’s biography page, or at the bottom of any album page, to ask for further details about CD availability.

o Can I download the music?

No. All of the music on the JSA website is copyright protected. The music is provided in a non-downloadable streaming audio format to prevent copies from being made which would violate this copyright protection.

CDs by some recording artists can be purchased. Please look for the “Send A Note” link at the bottom of the recording artist’s biography page, or at the bottom of any of their album pages, to inquire about CD availability.

o Do I need any special program to play the music?

No! You do not need any special program to access our music. The only thing you will need is the free Flash plug-in for your browser. If you are not sure your browser has the Flash Plug-in installed then click on the "Test Flash" button below.

You will receive a pop-up telling you whether or not you have Flash. If you do not, then click on the "Get Flash" button. It will redirect you to the Adobe website to install the Flash plugin.

o How can I hear the recordings?

  • If you are reading this help article online, then you are on the JSA website (http://www.fau.edu/jsa)
  • Click on the music tab and then click on the collections tab
  • Click on the music button at the lower right under each artist
  • The album list page will be visible
  • Click on any of the albums to play the music
  • At this point, the music page will be loaded and the music should start playing
o Why does the music sound "choppy?" (Why does it start, stop, start again, stop again while it is playing?)

It may be that you are accessing the Internet via a dial-up connection (or a slower speed broadband connection). Since our music player defaults to 128 kbps, you would need to have a connection which supports that speed.

HOWEVER! We have anticipated this problem, and we also offer a dial-up version of every song, which plays at a lower bit rate. So, if you are using dial-up, that would be the speed to select.

We have made a provision for this on our home page:

http://faujsa.fau.edu/jsa/

Immediately beneath the "page tabs" is a line which reads:

Connection: o Dial-up  o DSL/Broadband

The DSL/Broadband button is the default. Click on the Dial-up button.

You may also go to any of the artists' album pages and click the "Dial-up Connection" radio button. From that point on, all songs on our website will play at the correct speed for dial-up users.

o Why can’t I hear the music?

If you have followed all of the directions above, and you still can’t hear the music, then make sure your speakers are connected and turned on, and that "Mute" is turned off. If you can hear other music and sounds, then your computer is set up correctly to hear our music.

Try clearing your browser (Internet Explorer) cache:

  • Click on Tools on the menu bar
  • Click on Internet Options
  • Make sure you're on the "General" tab
  • Under "Temporary Internet Files" (in the middle of the page) click on "Delete Files"
    • (Note: The "Internet Options" page is slightly different in IE 7, but the approach is essentially the same.)
  • Check the box "Delete all offline content"
  • Click OK. It will take a minute or longer to clear all of the files if you haven’t done this lately.
  • Click OK to close the Internet Options screen
o Do you accept recordings with spoken dialogue?

Yes. We accept recordings with spoken dialogue.

o Can the JSA determine fair market value of donated material for tax purposes? If not, how do you suggest that be done?

No. We are not permitted to put a market value on donated materials. An acknowledgment letter will be sent to you with a count of donated recordings, which you can use to estimate value for tax purposes.

You can find some recordings for sale on www.ebay.com. That might help you to put a value on your recordings.

o Can a JSA zamler help me send my recordings to you?

No. The function of our volunteer zamlers is to publicize the JSA and to solicit donations of recordings. Packing and shipping are the responsibility of the donor.
